The
project targeted to New Ng'ombe Township, a poor urban
area, where the major source of drinking water is the
nearby Kasisi stream. The stream is also used for washing
clothes, bathing and disposal of waste. The few poeple
that have dug shallow wells within their compounds have
often pit latrines sited very close to the well, which
poses a serious health hazard. Due to the poor economic
status of the population, people cannot afford to boil
their drinking water or treat it with chlorine. As a
result of hte difficult water and sanitary situation,
the township of Ng'ombe is highly affected by diarrhoea
diseases throughout the year, especially cholera which
usually peaks during the rainy season.
