Main objectives
  • To create awareness among members of Ng'ombe community and other national stakeholders in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector on alow cost solar water disinfection method called Sodis
  • To build capacity among 8000 community members (or 1600 households) and other support organistions in the disinfection of water using SODIS
  • Build sustainablity in the use of the SODIS technology for disinfectin water in Ng'ombe and Zambia

Project Zone
   

The project targeted to New Ng'ombe Township, a poor urban area, where the major source of drinking water is the nearby Kasisi stream. The stream is also used for washing clothes, bathing and disposal of waste. The few poeple that have dug shallow wells within their compounds have often pit latrines sited very close to the well, which poses a serious health hazard. Due to the poor economic status of the population, people cannot afford to boil their drinking water or treat it with chlorine. As a result of hte difficult water and sanitary situation, the township of Ng'ombe is highly affected by diarrhoea diseases throughout the year, especially cholera which usually peaks during the rainy season.

 

  
   

Implementation Strategy
   

For the implementation of the SODIS project, KFZ has entered a collaboration with the Health Coordinating Commitee of Ng'ombe Township. The project will train 2 technical staff and 40 community based promotors. KZF will utilise its network with government departments and other NGOs to ensure SODIS is supported in Ng'ombe and information is spread beyond the project area through awareness and training.
